Innovation in SE Queensland

PBC

On my promotional tour of regional NSW schools I made a diversion into SE Queensland where I visited Peregian Beach College. This small independent school is leading the way with their creative use of time.

Following a research study by The Grattan Institute the college has reorganised their timetable to devote time to teachers mentoring teachers.

Teachers are observed in their classrooms by a mentor/colleague who then provides constructive feedback on their practice. The program is voluntary but the principal Chris Shirley reported most teachers are on board with the ideas. Regular weekly meetings ensure that the progress and insights gained can be useful in the classroom and can build teacher capacity .

Teaching is a solitary task and valuable insights into performance may be gained when we are observed in action. This innovative use of time can only work towards increasing teacher quality.
